Health Systems Use Patient Input to Improve Billing

Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic, Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania and other major health systems are meeting with patients to improve billing systems and create easier-to-read bills, according to Fierce Healthcare.

The collaboration aims to improve collections and satisfaction. The Healthcare Financial Management Association’s billing project tested various formats to find patients are most receptive to single monthly statements listing all outstanding charges and payments.

Hospital executives struggle with simplified bills, though, due to the specific language and terminology required by payors. To help patients, some healthcare providers are developing departments to make financial responsibility clearer.
