Dr. David Blumenthal: Electronic Health Records Need to be Easier for Physicians to Use

Electronic health records need to become more easy for physicians and patients to use to make the investment worthwhile for practices, according to Healthcare Finance News.

Usability has become more of an issue since EHR adoption has increased so vendors need to increase focus on making their products less disruptive, according to David Blumenthal, MD, former national health IT coordinator.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is developing technical requirements for EHRs, but in addition to technical functions, these systems need requirements for how users perform with the system, according to the report.

Physicians need EHRs to become more intuitive so they take less time away from patient encounters.
