Hubert Fu, MD, co-founded Dallas-based Debt M.D., a collection services that aims to bring polite physician bedside manner to the practice of recouping medical payments, according to Healthcare Finance News.
Debt M.D. is one of the only physician-owned and -operated debt collection agencies in the country, the report says. Dr. Fu is an anesthesiologist who began practicing medicine in 2004. Since that time, he saw patient collections increase, and more of his time was required on billing related matters.
Dr. Fu said as a physician he feels a sense of responsibility to care for sick patients and help them with financial matters, according to the report. Since this mission is not mirrored by many collection agencies, he created Debt M.D. to bring compassion and ultimately greater success to medical debt collection.
