Debt Collector Accretive Health Fined $2.5M by Minnesota, Banned From the State for Three Years

National medical debt bill collector Accretive Health was fined $2.5 million by the state of Minnesota, according to the Brainerd Dispatch.

While not admitting any wrongdoing, Accretive agreed to pay the fine to settle accusations it violated federal law requiring patients to pay for services even if they can't afford it.

Sixty patients filed complaints with the state, saying the credit collection company hounded them in the emergency room or while they were sick in the hospital. Only two of the patients did not have insurance.

Accretive Health will not be allowed to do business in the state for at least three years, in accordance with terms of the settlement.
