The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services updated its policy for coding place of service, according to AAPC.
The changes stipulate services for registered outpatients should be reported with POS code 22, unless the precise setting is known.
Services performed for a registered inpatient should be reported with code 21, regardless of where the services take place. The exact setting may require a different code.
Face-to-face services for someone not registered as inpatient or outpatient should include a POS code to match the setting in which the service took place. No face-to-face service should include the POS that the beneficiary received the technical component of service.
