CMS Denial Edits Update: How to Avoid Medicare Claim Denials Next Year

The American Medical Association and Medical Group Management Association has released a new fact sheet designed to help physicians prepare for new Medicare denial edits, set to go into effect Jan. 6, 2014.

Physicians must either enroll in Medicare or opt out to avoid payment denial. The new edits apply to some claims for imaging, clinical laboratory, home health services, durable medical equipment, prosthetics and orthotics.

The fact sheet provides information about whether physicians can appeal claims denied by these edits, how to list the referring physician on a claim and how the edits will impact physicians who privately contract with Medicare.
