ASCs see increase in medical payments for workers' comp claims

Medical payments per workers' comp claim have increased for ASCs, new research shows.

A study from the Workers Compensation Research Institute examined data from 2012 through 2018 for 18 states, representing over 60 percent of workers' compensation benefit payments in the U.S.

Three details:

1. Payments to ASCs and hospital outpatient departments increased in Minnesota, while payments to hospital inpatient departments decreased after the 2016 inpatient fee schedule change.

2. Payments per claim in North Carolina have decreased 5 percent to 7 percent since 2014. The institute said the changes are most likely due to Medicare fee schedule changes affecting ASCs and hospitals.

3. Payments per claim are higher in Florida for ASCs, hospital outpatient departments and hospital inpatient departments, while payments for non-hospital professional services are low.
