AMA voices concern over insurance mergers — 4 points

The American Medical Association released a 12-page analysis explaining how the recent Anthem-Cigna and Aetna-Humana mergers will hurt patients.

Here are four points:

1. The AMA states the mergers will result in "unprecedented lack of competition" in the market.

2. The lack of competition is not in the best interest of patients or providers, according to the analysis.

3. According to 2013 insurance enrollment data, the analysis expects the mergers will decrease competition in 154 cities within 23 states.

4. The Department of Justice must approve the mergers before they are finalized.
