Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealthcare is collaborating with the American Medical Association to create nearly two dozen ICD-10 codes.

Four notes:

1. The set of billing codes is intended to better identify and address social determinants of health, or nonmedical issues such as food, housing, transportation and financial circumstances.

2. The proposed ICD-10 codes were submitted to the ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee for review.

3. As part of the collaboration, UnitedHealthcare created a model to standardize how data on social and environmental factors are collected, processed and integrated.

4. The AMA and UnitedHealthcare are working together through the AMA's Integrated Health Model Initiative, which is focused on developing common data portability standards to improve interoperability.
