AMA May Consider ICD-11 as to Successor to ICD-9

At the American Medical Association's 2012 House of Delegates meeting, members voted to evaluate ICD-11 as a possible alternative to ICD-9, while the ICD-10 implementation date looms nearer, according to Dynamic Chiropractic.

The deadline for all healthcare systems to be ICD-10 compliant was extended to Oct. 1, 2014, according to current Health and Human Services guidelines. That leaves only 15 months for the AMA to decide if ICD-11 is worth pursuing instead, effectively skipping over ICD-10.

The World Health Organization, which publishes the International Classification of Diseases, should have a final draft of ICD-11 for official endorsement by 2015.
