Adding ENT procedures, joint replacements & more: 3 ways for ASCs to maintain profitable reimbursement

Keeping up with contracts as an ASC adds new specialties is essential to for a center to be successful, according to Westchester, Ill.-based Regent Surgical Health Managed Care Vice President Andrea Woodell.

Ms. Woodell shared three tips to maintain profitable reimbursement on Regent's blog.

The key insights to know:

1. When the time comes to renegotiate contracts, ASCs should build contracts for current specialties and think about how those contracts would support new specialties, Ms. Woodell said

2. For ENT procedures, Ms. Woodell said, payer payments in multiples can present a challenge. Negotiating with payers and respecting their positions may benefit ASCs when negotiating new contracts.

3. When adding total joint replacement procedures, look into the total joint replacement volume pulled from hospitals by contracted centers accepting lower reimbursement, Ms. Woodell recommended. Then, an ASC can evaluate its competition and advocate for higher reimbursement.
