6 Tips From CMS on ICD-10 Risk Mitigation

CMS issued several tips for mitigating risk during the ICD-10 coding transition.

The organization recommends developing a transition plan to decide how practices will comply with ICD-10, establishing milestones for keeping everyone on task and sharing the transition plan with vendors.

Here are six other tips from CMS for a smooth transition:
•    Communicate regularly with vendors to ensure practice management systems will be able to handle the new transactions.
•    Identify any functions that use ICD-9 and will be affected by ICD-10.
•    Determine which staff members need training and when they should receive it.
•    Work with peers in the industry to share resources and tips.
•    Have an emergency plan for cash flow disruptions from claims processing delays.
•    Get all ICD-9 claims processed before the deadline to avoid a backlog.
