Price transparency is taking healthcare by storm. Individual providers are revealing prices, state legislation is pushing for transparency and third-party websites are compiling and publishing cost data. Here are four recent moves joining the movement towards clear, open pricing in healthcare and the ambulatory surgery center industry.
Colorado price transparency website CO Medical Price Compare plans to add prices for the states ambulatory surgery centers by the end of the year.
The website Wisconsin PricePoint compares inpatient and outpatient prices in the state. The website includes pricing information for hospitals, urgent care settings and Medicare-certified ambulatory surgery centers in the state.
The nonprofit Center for Improving Value in Health Care has launched a website that allows consumers to compare hospital prices. Ambulatory surgery center prices are expected to be posted by the end of the year.
Two new state laws that aim to inject transparency and drive consumerism in healthcare have taken effect in Maine. One law will require hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers to provide the average charge for any service or procedure on request. Facilities will also have to post notice of this information's availability. A second law will require healthcare providers to gather a list of their most common procedures, anything performed more than 50 times a year and the price set for uninsured patients.
