Plastic surgeon Jonathan Kaplan, MD, founded the price estimator tool BuildMyBod to help patients learn about procedures and review surgical costs.
Through the price estimator, which is used by Columbus-based Ohio Surgery Center, patients select their insurance plan, provide contact information and receive an email detailing estimated out-of-pocket costs.
Dr. Kaplan shared two reasons why just listing cash prices online is problematic:
1. A menu of cash prices fails to help ASC patients using insurance understand the allowable they'll be expected to pay.
2. The ASC doesn't know who's viewing the listing, and therefore can't follow up to help patients navigate the billing and collections process.
