The Texas Medical Board has approved 108 disciplinary actions against physicians in the state for various violations, including 44 involving standard of care violations, according to a state news release.
The penalties for the 108 disciplined physicians include public reprimand, medical license suspensions and payment of administrative penalties. Some physicians were also ordered to undergo continuing education for their violations. Physicians disciplined for their quality of care include the following individuals:
Stephen Abernathy, MD. Dr. Abernathy must complete 24 hours of CME (16 hours in performing colonoscopies and eight hours in medical record-keeping) within one year. The board found Dr. Abernathy misdiagnosed a patient with hemorrhoids, when the patient actually had a malignant anal tumor.
Neil Atlin, DO. Dr. Atlin must complete 16 hours of CME (eight hours in medical record-keeping and eight hours in risk management) within one year and pay an administrative penalty of $1,000. The board found Dr. Atlin failed to document in the medical record his rationale for not removing all of a spinal cord stimulator in his patient's back.
Daniel Dawson, MD. Dr. Dawson was publicly reprimanded and must complete 20 hours of CME (eight hours in gynecological oncology, eight hours in vulvar diseases and four hours in physician-patient communication) within one year. He must also pay an administrative penalty of $5,000. The board found Dr. Dawson failed to adequately evaluate a lesion on a 91-year-old patient who subsequently died of metastatic cancer.
