Surgery Centers Win AAAHC Institute Quality Improvement Award

The Siouxland Surgery Center in Dakota Dunes, S.D., and the Madison (Wis.) Surgery Center have received the 2012 Bernard A. Kershner Innovations in Quality Improvement Award.

The awards were given by the AAAHC Institute for Quality Improvement, a not-for-profit subsidiary of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.

The Siouxland Surgery Center was recognized for its research on decreasing surgical site infections in knee, hip and spinal fusion procedures. The surgery center's new infection prevention program, which includes a new workflow pattern in the decontamination room to minimize cross-contamination, helped minimize lumbar spine infection rates by 61.5 percent. In addition, hip and knee infection rates fell to zero last quarter.

The Madison Surgery Center improved its patient satisfaction questionnaire to include new elements, including a more detailed rating scale, additional questions to score the center as a whole and more.
