Scripps Health and Sharp Memorial hospitals have agreed to pay a combined $375,000 to settle allegations of improperly handling, transporting and storing medical waste at their facilities and at a San Diego landfill, according to a news release from the San Diego County District Attorney's office.
Violations include unlawful disposal of medical and or hazardous waste such as blood and tissue; failing to separate medical waste properly; unlawful transportation of medical and hazardous waste; and various violations of other storage, transfer and permitting requirements. The patterns of violations took place over "a significant amount of time," according to the news release.
Both hospitals have agreed to adhere to proper waste disposal practices and to engage in additional projects to benefit the environment. Scripps Health will pay $272,870 in civil penalties and costs, and Sharp will pay $102,939 in penalties and costs.
