California Public Health Department Issues $850k in Penalties Against Hospitals

The California Department of Public Health has issued approximately $850,000 in penalties against 14 California hospitals, whose noncompliance with licensing requirements caused, or was likely to cause, serious injury or death to patients.

The following hospitals received penalties. Unless otherwise noted, these penalties were the first issued against the hospital in question:

1. Fresno Surgical Hospital — $50,000. The hospital did not follow surgical policies and procedures, which resulted in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object.

2. Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital — $50,000. The hospital failed to implement policies and procedures for the safe administration of medication.

3. Kaiser Foundation Hospital — $50,000. The hospital failed to implement its established policies and procedures for the safe and effective administration of medication.

4. LAC+USC Medical Center — $25,000. The hospital failed to follow its surgical policies and procedures, which resulted in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object. This is the fifth administrative penalty issued to this facility.

5. Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital — $50,000. The hospital failed to implement policies and procedures for the safe administration of medication. This is the second administrative penalty issued to this facility.

6. Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center — $100,000. The hospital did not follow its surgical policies and procedures, which resulted in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object. This is the fourth administrative penalty issued to this facility.

7. San Francisco General Hospital — $50,000. The hospital failed to follow its surgical policies and procedures. This is the second administrative penalty issued to this facility.

8. Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital — $50,000. The hospital failed to develop and implement safety measures which ensure the protection of a patient.

9. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla — $100,000.  The hospital failed to follow its surgical policies and procedures, which resulted in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object. This is the sixth administrative penalty issued to this facility.

10. St. Jude Medical Center — $75,000. The hospital failed to implement policies and procedures for the safe administration of medication. This is the third administrative penalty issued to this facility.

11. Sutter Solano Medical Center — $50,000. The hospital did not follow its surgical policies and procedures, which resulted in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object.

12. Torrance Memorial Medical Center — $75,000. The hospital did not follow its surgical policies and procedures, which resulted in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object. This is the second administrative penalty issued to this facility.

13. UCSF Medical Center — $75,000. The hospital failed to ensure the health and safety of a patient when the hospital did not follow its surgical policies and procedures. This is the sixth administrative penalty issued to this facility.

14. Ventura County Medical Center — $50,000. The hospital did not follow its surgical policies and procedures, which resulted in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object. This is the second administrative penalty issued to this facility.
