California OB/GYN Publicly Reprimanded for Depriving Baby of Oxygen During Delivery

California's medical board has publicly reprimanded Adwoa Christy, MD, a board-certified OB/GYN, for depriving a baby of oxygen during delivery, thereby causing developmental delay, according to a San Jose Mercury News report.

Dr. Christy took over a patient's delivery after the change of another physician's shift. State investigators found Dr. Christy did not appropriately respond to abnormal fetal heart patterns and did not switch to a caesarean section delivery after unsuccessfully trying vacuum-assisted delivery three times, according to the report.

Dr. Christy told the medical board vacuum delivery was performed at the suggestion of the initial physician and abnormal fetal heart patterns were not a major concern as it is not uncommon for cord compression, according to the report. Dr. Christy has agreed to undergo additional education for at least 40 hours. Guidelines for physician changes have since been changed.
