5 Steps to Emergency Preparedness

Here are five ways to ensure your healthcare organization is prepared for a disaster or emergency, according to the latest Connection report by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.

1. Prepare for the worst. AAAHC recommends all healthcare organizations make a list of disasters or emergencies that could realistically occur, including fires or other weather-related concerns.

2. Implement action plans for each scenario. Healthcare organizations should craft and document action plans for each plausible disaster or emergency. These plans must be easily accessible and taught to each staff member.

3. Work with community members. Partner with local community businesses and organizations, such as the fire department, to ensure all resources are properly pooled and used.

4. Conduct emergency drills. Practice drills will ensure staff members understand how to take care of patients in the case of an emergency or disaster.

5. Measure the effectiveness of your emergency response plans. After your organization conducts practice drills, survey participating members and evaluate the outcomes to ensure all emergency response plans are effective.
