5 Performance Improvement Basics

The following are five tips on performance improvement basics for ambulatory care organizations as presented by Dana Dunn, RN, BSN, and Pam Roark, RN, MSN, MA, surveyors from The Joint Commission, as presented on the organization's podcast series, Take 5 With the Joint Commission.

1. To begin process improvement, address areas that have potential risks for the organization. Conduct a comprehensive risk assessment to identify features that belong in a performance improvement plan.

2. Performance improvement is a continuous process. Once it begins, it is ongoing. Be sure to document data and improvements.

3. Select and follow a methodology, and create a performance improvement framework before starting a project.

5. Cast a wide data-collection net at first, then narrow data collection focus based on experience. Set clear quantitative goals to help limit data collection to relevant areas.

5. Choose a first performance improvement project with a high success rate, in order to test communication with staff members and boost morale.
