4 scripting opportunities to improve patient safety

According to patient safety group LifeWings, teaching employees scripts for dealing with problems with patient care is highly effective in preventing inaction. Here are four tips from the organization on creating and implementing script-based interventions.

1. Develop a diplomatic script which uses the type of language staff should use when dealing with a perceived patient safety issue. The language should be automatic, clear and should use situational keywords, depending on the purpose for the particular script.

2. Provide trainings using the scripts, so staff may see what using the script looks like in the moment. Also provide training by example — using positive role modeling to reinforce the formally taught message.

3. Help staff practice, so using the script becomes automatic when it is needed.

4. Reward staff members who speak up.
