3 Quick Tips to Better Meet Accreditation Standards

Sandy Berreth, RN, MS, CASC, administrator of Brainerd Lakes Surgery Center in in Baxter, Minn., shares three ways her ASC has recently improved its efforts to better meet accreditation requirements.

1. AAAHC has changed the quality reporting system from a 7-point document to a 10-point document; their rationale is that an organization needs to "close the loop."  With this process, we have developed a template with the 10 points and questions that facilitate the method. (Note: You can view this template of 10 steps and guidelines by clicking here.)

2. I have also developed a system of noting all changes made to any processes to "show" the accrediting bodies that the organization is consistently meeting the needs of the patient population.

3. As with everything safety we have now instituted an even stricter policy regarding "time-out; pause for the cause."  We are using physical blocks to make it impossible to proceed with using a knife without first pausing to verify the site.
