The National Institutes of Health released a study that showed use of a brain monitor while patients are anesthetized during surgery can significantly reduce the risk of delirium and postoperative cognitive dysfunction.
The study included 921 elderly patients and confirms the dangers of over-medicating during surgery.
The study projected that for every 1,000 patients, brain monitoring would prevent delirium in 83 patients and POCD in 23 within 30 days after surgery.
