Anesthesia may worsen the neurological disorder xeroderma pigmentosum in afflicted patients, according to 7th Space.
Xeroderma pigmentation is a rare, autosomal recessive disease. It causes abnormalities in skin pigmentation, precancerous lesions and neurological abnormalities, according to the report.
A patient with the disease was recently observed after being given sevoflurane for a femoral neck fracture procedure. When she awoke from surgery, she was confused and had sharpened reflexes. Surgeons concluded the sevoflurane had a deleterious effect on her neurological state, according to the report.
