Stanford anesthesiologist Dr. Kevin Malott dies at 49

Anesthesiologist and professor Kevin Malott, MD, 49, died July 26, following a brief illness.

Dr. Malott was a clinical associate professor of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine at the Stanford (Calif.) University School of Medicine. Dr. Malott joined Stanford's faculty in 2001 and began specializing in treating pediatric patients at Palo Alto, Calif.-based Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford in 2015.

In 2014, he was voted a favorite instructor and awarded the H. Barrie Fairley Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Malott enjoyed hiking, travel, reading, playing the piano, attending San Francisco Giants games and skateboarding. Before shifts, he arrived at Stanford early and went skateboarding in empty parking structures.

He also traveled to developing countries on medical missions to provide pediatric plastic surgery services.

Dr. Malott is survived by his wife, Jocelyn Malott, RN, who is a nurse practitioner in orthopedic oncology at Stanford Health Care, his daughter, son and two stepsons.

Stanford's Kevin Malott Memorial Fund for graduating anesthesia residents was established in his honor. Donations can also be made to Medical Missions for Children or St. James the Apostle Catholic Church in Fremont, Calif.
