Pennsylvania House Passes Anesthesiologist Supervision Bill

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has approved a bill that will require a physician to supervise other medical professionals administering anesthesia during medical procedures, according to a Times Online report.

The state's department of health has required physician supervision over the administration of anesthesia for the last 30 years, but new bill will make the regulation part of the law under the Medical Practice Act.

While the Pennsylvania Medical Society supports the legislation, organizations such as the Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Anesthetists and the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association have opposed the legislation, arguing that it could increase costs and limit patient access to care.
