The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General will be reviewing payments for personally performed anesthesia services for the fiscal year 2013, according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
The OIG crafts a work plan each year and considers factors such as concerns raised by Congress, work to be performed in collaboration with partner organizations, top management and performance challenges facing HHS and timeliness.
For 2013, the OIG has decided to review Medicare Part B claims for personally performed anesthesia services to determine whether they were supported by Medicare requirements. The OIG will also be checking claims submitted using certain anesthesia modifiers.
