Montgomery Surgical Center's Dr. Jack Anderson Defends Use of Propofol for Sedation

Jack Anderson, MD, an anesthesiologist who works at the Montgomery Surgical Center, recently defended propofol sedation in an interview with the Montgomery Advisor.

Dr. Anderson was responding to a recent study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which suggested too many patients who undergo colonoscopies receive extra sedation treatment. The study posited this treatment costs as much as $1 billion annually in potentially needless services.

Dr. Jack Anderson said propofol sedation offers advantages to the patient, the endoscopist and the healthcare system as a whole. He said the study did not address several advantages offered by propofol, including a quicker recovery process and greater patient satisfaction.

Dr. Jack Anderson said the surgery center used to use Demerol and versed sedation and has seen more efficient processes and greater patient satisfaction since switching to propofol.
