Dr. Michael Humphrey Discusses Draw, Downsides of Anesthesiology

Michael Humphrey, MD, an anesthesiologist with the Associated Anesthesiologists of Reno, recently discussed his passion for the specialty with MDNews.

Dr. Humphrey, who is board-certified in both pediatrics and anesthesiology, said he was drawn to the medical profession while attending college in Iowa. After completing his undergraduate work, he attended the University of Arizona in Tucson for medical school. He first wanted to be a pediatric intensivist but decided to train in anesthesiology when he realized the skills and training were similar for the two specialties.

He said he realized he did not want to work in intensive care because of the constant concern for patients. "The nice thing about anesthesiology is that if your patient is healthy, you drop them off in the recovery room, they're stable, breathing normally and everything is under control," he told MDNews.

He said the only downside to anesthesiology is that the specialty lacks the personal relationships with patients that other physicians enjoy. He said while he sometimes develops relationships with children with chronic problems, anesthesiologists do not have the same connection with their patients as other specialists.
