An anesthesiologist from the Chicago suburbs will spend two weeks providing medical support and delivering donated equipment to a children's hospital in Niger, according to a Northwest Herald report. Lawrence Lavine, MD, of Crystal Lake, has taken part in medical mission work for the past 20 years. This will be his second year working through CURE International, administering anesthetics for cleft lip repairs and other procedures.
"[Dr. Lavine] is filling a critical gap for us as we search for another full-time anesthesiologist to join our staff in Niger," said Leron Lehman, executive director of CURE Hopital des Enfants au Niger.
Dr. Lavine is trying to secure a sevoflurane vaporizer and a carbon dioxide detector for the trip, which would allow the children's hospital to provide better safety for patients under anesthesia.
