90% of Anesthesiologists Erroneously Consider LMA ProSeal and Flexible Unsafe for MRI

According to a new survey presented at the 2011 annual meeting of the Society for Airway Management, as many as 90 percent of anesthesiologists incorrectly believe the LMA ProSeal and LMA Flexible are unsafe for MRI scans, according to an Anesthesiology News report.

The researchers said both metal-reinforced supraglottic airways are appropriate for use in the scanning machines. The researchers said providers most likely do not understand the labeling terms used to describe MRI compatibility for the devices.

The researchers asked 20 anesthesiologists if they would use the LMA ProSeal and LMA Flexible during MRI. They found that 85 percent were unwilling to use a ProSeal and 90 percent were unwilling to use the Flexible in the MRI setting.
