Somnia Anesthesia released a report on the 2017 anesthesia labor market.
Somnia surveyed nearly 400 anesthesia providers. Sixty-three percent of the survey pool were nurse anesthetists and 37 percent were anesthesiologists. They were surveyed on practice information, practice preference and specialties.
The respondent pool was highly experienced with 71.2 percent of anesthesiologist respondents reporting 11-plus years of clinical experience. Approximately 57.3 percent of CRNAs had 11-plus years of experience.
Here are eight things to know.
1. Concerning anesthesiologist salary data:
- 33.8 percent made less than $350,000
- 9.7 percent made between $351,000 to $375,000
- 13.8 percent made between $376,000 to $400,000
- 11.7 percent made between $401,000 to $425,000
- 31 percent made more than $426,000
2. Concerning CRNA salary data:
- 29.6 percent made under $175,000
- 24.3 percent made between $175,000 and $200,000
- 23.5 percent made between $201,000 and $225,000
- 11.9 percent made between $226,000 and $250,000
- 10.7 percent made more than $251,000
3. Florida, Texas and New York were the top states for anesthesiologists to practice in.
4. Florida, Texas and Ohio were the top states for CRNAs to practice in.
5. Ninety percent of anesthesia professionals secured a position in their desired state.
6. When it came to accepting a new position, both anesthesiologists and CRNAs viewed compensation, work schedule and practice setting as the most important elements.
7. Of all respondents, 64.8 percent preferred hospitals, 31.1 percent prefered ASCs and 4.1 percent preferred office-based settings.
8. Of all respondents, 66.8 percent preferred outpatient surgical settings, 43.5 percent preferred plastic surgery practices and 43.3 percent preferred to work in obstetrics.
