The Medical Payment Advisory Commission has appointed Alice Coombs, MD, as one of its five new members. Her term will run from May 2012 through May 2015. Dr. Coombs is an anesthesiologist and critical care specialist at Milton Hospital and South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Mass.
The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New Hyde Park, N.Y., announced the appointment of Charles Schleien, MD, as chair of pediatrics. Before joining CCMC, Dr. Schleien was executive vice chairman in the department of pediatrics at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and professor of pediatrics and anesthesiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital, both in New York City.
St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., has selected Philip Glogover, MD, and Arthur A. Smith, MD, to serve as interim chairs of the department of anesthesiology. Supported by a staff of seven anesthesiologists and 18 certified registered nurse anesthetists, they will provide general, obstetrical and cardiovascular anesthesiology coverage.
The American Pain Society has awarded Elliot Krane, MD, the Jeffrey Lawson Award in recognition of advocacy efforts to improve pain management in children. Dr. Krane was the first chief of anesthesia and pain management at Stanford University's Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., where he furthered his interest in pediatric anesthesia and the treatment of pain in children. Dr. Krane has quadrupled the size of the pediatric pain management clinic, founded an outpatient pain rehabilitation center and an inpatient pain rehabilitation center, and raised more than $1 million to endow the pain program.
Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, an anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, was elected speaker of the House of Delegates of the Massachusetts Medical Society. The Massachusetts Medical Society House of Delegates is the policy-making body of the Society, possessing the authority to establish two general types of policy: health policies and directives.
