12 Challenges for Anesthesia Groups Next Year

Anesthesia Business Consultants CEO Tony Mira recently posted an article about the biggest challenges for anesthesia practices next year.

Mr. Mira’s top challenges include:

1. Healthcare reform rollout, including health insurance exchanges.

2. Consolidation and strategic positioning in the healthcare market.

3. Growing prevalence of anesthesia care teams and incorporating midlevel providers into the practice.

4. Meeting hospital expectations as resources shrink, including coverage outside the OR and justification for stipends.

5. Payer efforts to control healthcare costs with pay-for-performance initiatives and shared savings programs.

6. Health system partnerships and accountable care organizations which will require anesthesiologists to obtain data on payment for units of service.

7. Perioperative surgical homes as an answer to patient-centered medical homes.

8. Documenting and reporting quality performance for external agencies such as CMS and internal benchmarking.

9. Switch to ICD-10 coding with full implementation being on Oct. 1, 2014.

10. Participation in meaningful use and implementing health information technology.

11. New HIPAA regulations that require practices to document risk analysis for their health information.

12. More scrutiny on medical necessity and increased audits of anesthesia providers from the Recovery Audit Contractors.
