Pennsylvania Physician Sentenced to Prison for Healthcare Fraud

John D. Kristofic, MD, an internal medicine physician in Pittsburgh, has been sentenced to one year in prison followed by three years of supervised release for committing healthcare fraud, according to a news release by Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania Robert S. Cessar.

Dr. Kristofic was convicted of submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare and other insurers for services never performed. He received more than $1 million in payment on the fraudulent claims, according to the release.

Mr. Kristofic also paid more than $3.3 million in restitution to the government to cover the cost of the fraudulent claims as well as the government's investigation.
