The owners and operators of OM Best Help Corporation, a Miami-area medical equipment company, have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in a durable medical equipment fraud scheme, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.
Obel Martinez and Damaris Gil, husband and wife, were sentenced to 70 months and 37 months in prison, respectively. According to plea documents, they submitted false and fraudulent claims to Medicare for DME and other medical items and services that were medically unnecessary and not prescribed by a physician or licensed healthcare provider. Approximately $1.1 million in false claims were submitted to Medicare, and Medicare paid $474,662 to OM Best based on those claims.
In addition to their prison terms, Mr. Martinez and Ms. Gil will each serve three years of supervised release. They were also ordered to pay $474,662 in restitution.
