Sony Previews Medical Grade Blu-ray 3D Recorder, 3D Monitor

Sony Electronics has announced it provided a preview of the company's new medical grade Blu-ray 3D recorder and a 3D medical grade monitor to attendees of the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, which took place late October, according to a news release from Sony.

The Blu-ray recorder, the HVO-3000MT, 3D recording technology for the surgical community that records surgical footage in 3D, is described by Sony as an "optimized 3D sophisticated full-featured digital capture system." It is intended for use with 3D high-definition surgical camera systems and for display on a 3D monitor. The HVO-3000MT is expected to be available spring of 2012.

Sony provided a preview of such a monitor, the LMD-2451MT (pending 501(k)), at ACS. Sony says the LMD-2451MT monitor uses technology similar to that used in commercial 3D motion pictures to allow surgeons and medical students to view 3D recordings of surgery.

"3D technology allows the surgeon to experience 3D vision and depth perception similar to natural viewing that can enhance dissection, grasping, suturing and stapling skills, potentially contributing to greater surgical precision, improved hand-eye coordination and the potential to reduce fatigue," said George Santanello, general manager, Sony Electronics' medical systems division, in the release. "Sony is committed to providing innovative solutions to the surgical market that continue to advance and transform the operating room and takes surgeons from a two-dimensional to a three-dimensional world as they strive to increase efficiency and improve clinical outcomes."
