UC San Diego Center Trains Patients' Brains to Reduce Chronic Pain

The Center for Mindfulness at the UC San Diego Health System helps patients tolerate chronic pain by training their brains to lessen experiences of discomfort and in some cases eliminate them, according to a report by NewsWise.

The center offers an eight-week program, called "Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction," featuring techniques such as guided meditation, gentle yoga and breathing exercises.

Center representatives say the experience of pain varies from patient to patient for reasons that are not always explainable. Emotional distress is provoked and manifested differently in each person. Even among patients with the same physical symptoms, one is angry or afraid while the other is stoic and reserved.
