Senate Committee Hears Testimony on Pain in America

Yesterday, five witnesses testified in a Capitol Hill hearing on "Pain in America: Exploring Challenges to Relief," called by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

The hearing comes after the Institute of Medicine report last year that recommended improving diagnosis, treatment and research into chronic pain.

Panelists were:
• Lawrence A. Tabak, DDS, PhD, principal deputy director, National Institutes of Health, Washington, D.C.
• Philip A. Pizzo, MD, dean of the School of Medicine, Stanford (Calif.) University School of Medicine
• John E. Sarno, MD, professor of clinical rehabilitation medicine, New York University School of Medicine, New York City
• William Maixner, DDS, PhD, director, Center for Neurosensory Disorders, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
• Christin Veasley, executive director, National Vulvodynia Association, North Kingstown, R.I.
