Kentucky Study Links Smoking to Chronic Pain in Women

A new study shows that women who smoke are more likely to experience chronic musculoskeletal pain, according to a University of Kentucky news release.

Surveying 6,000 Kentucky women, UK researchers found that former smokers showed a 20 percent increase in chronic pain compared with non-smokers, while occasional smokers showed a 68 percent increase and daily smokers showed a 104 percent increase.

In fact, daily smoking was associated more strongly with chronic pain than older age, lower educational attainment, obesity or living in an Appalachian county.
