Outpatient THA surgery adverse event rates at ASCs are low: 4 study findings

Research published in the Journal of Arthroplasty found the rate for adverse events following an outpatient total hip arthroplasty at a free-standing surgery center is low.

Researchers studied the records of patients who had undergone total hip arthroplasties by a single surgeon at two separate ASCs. Hospital admissions, complications, length of surgery, blood loss and the time spent at the surgery center were recorded. The researchers studied 125 patients underwent 145 outpatient total hip replacements over a three-year period

Here are the key study takeaways:

1. Only one of the 145 procedures required transfer from the outpatient facility to a hospital for a blood transfusion.

2. There weren't any other direct admissions from the surgery center to the hospital or transfers to the emergency room.

3. Surgical interventions were required after three of the 145 procedures.

4. "This study demonstrated that same-day discharge to home following THA can be safely done without increased complications, readmissions, reoperations or emergency room visits," the researchers concluded.
