Dr. Shane Smith performs 1st outpatient total joint replacements in Walton County, Georgia: 4 things to know

Shane M. Smith, MD, performed the first outpatient total joint replacement surgeries in Walton County at the Athens (Ga.) Orthopedic Clinic and at the Monroe, Ga.-based Piedmont Walton Hospital, the Walton Tribune reported.

Here are the key details to know:

1. Before the new center opened, Walton County residents sought outpatient orthopedic surgery at the local hospital or traveled outside of the county.

2. Dr. Smith told the Tribune that he predicts total joint replacements are going to be performed outpatient more frequently because surgeons can perform safe procedures in the ASC and achieve better outcomes.

3. He also said the risk of complications and infection risk is lower with outpatient procedures.

4. The Athens Orthopedic Clinic opened in 1966, and treats injuries and diseases of the muscles, bones, nerves, ligaments and more.
