Orthopedic infection risk in ASCs is low, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Researchers reviewed data from patients who underwent orthopedic surgery at an ASC during a period of roughly six years to find evidence of surgical site infections.

1. The rate of surgical site infections was .32 percent.
2. The five independent factors associated with surgical site infections are anatomic area, anesthesia type, age greater than or equal to 70, diabetes mellitus and tourniquet time.
3. Researchers concluded, "The risk of infection after orthopedic surgery in ASCs is low, but patient and surgical factors are independently associated with [surgical site infections]."
