The American Society of Anesthesiologists outlined current trends in outpatient total joint replacements in their Monitor newsletter.
Here are five details to know:
1. Minimally invasive surgery and pain management techniques allow patients to be discharged earlier.
2. According to the SG2 Health Care & Hospital System Consultancy, 20 percent of primary knee replacements and 15 percent of primary total hip replacements will be performed in outpatient settings by 2025.
3. The growth of outpatient total joint surgery can be attributed to social readiness, appropriate patient selection and financial considerations.
4. Outpatient total joint procedures can cost up to 20 to 30 percent less than procedures performed in an inpatient setting.
5. Patients experience both short and long-term savings.
