Will Ophthalmologists Stop Taking Medicare?

In the Ophthalmologist Compensation Report: 2013, Medscape asked respondents whether they would consider not taking Medicare patients. Medicare traditionally reimburses lower than private payers for the same procedures.

The ophthalmologists responded:

•    I plan to stop taking new Medicare/Medicaid patients: 7 percent
•    I plan to stop taking current Medicare/Medicaid Patients: 2 percent
•    I will continue taking new and current Medicare/Medicaid patients: 61 percent
•    I have not yet decided: 30 percent
