Vision Care of Maine in Bangor has invested in the Catalys Precision Laser System and is now performing cataract laser refractive surgery, according to Bangor Daily News report and WABI report.
Founder Craig Young, MD, told WABI that Vision Care of Maine's Catalys system is the only one in New England. There are less than 100 of the machines in use across the country, according to the Bangor Daily News report.
Dr. Young and his son, retina and cataract surgeon Dr. Curt Young, perform the laser refractive surgery at Vision Care of Maine. Using Catalys, surgeons can access and remove the cataract-affected lens with accuracy that is within tens of microns, according to Vision Care of Maine's website. In addition, Catalys is designed to make break-up and removal of the cataract easier and gentler on a patient.
Vision Care of Maine began offering the procedure in mid-July, and 8-10 patients a week now undergo the procedure at the facility.
