Glaucoma Researcher, Ophthalmology Leader Dr. Bernie Becker Dies at 93

Eminent glaucoma researcher Bernie Becker, MD, died this week at age 93, according to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.
Dr. Becker discovered one of the first treatments for the eye disease — acetazolamide, a pill to decrease brain pressure. He helped establish the National Eye Institute, as well helping shape the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology at Washington University.

Dr. Becker led the ophthalmology department at Washington University School of Medicine for 35 years.

He was diagnosed with non-smoking lung cancer in 2005.
