Balamurali Ambati, MD, of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, is leading a team of researchers in the study of polymer nanoparticles as a treatment for macular degeneration, according to a report by Chemical & Engineering News.
The nanoparticles are designed to deliver a therapeutic gene to the patient's eye through a single intravenous injection, rather than through a series of injections given directly into the eye.
Dr. Ambati and his research team are currently testing the treatment on mice.
