Replacement HOPD Brings New Technology, Convenience to Tennessee's Jackson-Madison County General Hospital

The West Tennessee Surgery Center, which recently opened on the campus of 660-bed Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tenn., is a 10-OR HOPD that replaces a 20-year-old facility.

"All I see are smiles on everybody's faces," says James Brown, executive director of the center. "It's getting rave reviews."

The ORs are 30 percent bigger than in the old center and there are no dedicated rooms, Mr. Brown says. Seven of the ORs have Stryker-integrated OR technology, with endoscopy, arthroscopy and other equipment on ceiling-mounted equipment booms. Surgeons can view images through PAC systems and access EMRs. They use LED surgical lighting, which allows for comfortable temperatures while providing the same high-intensity lighting as before.

The operation can be viewed on multiple screens, enabling the OR nurse to turn her back to the operation to deal with other tasks and still see what is happening on the monitor. She can even see the image through the surgeon's endoscope and anticipate what he needs next. The viewing monitors also allow surgeons to position equipment to meet their individual needs.

Mr. Brown says the center handles smaller cases than the 26 ORs in the hospital next door, but still deals with a wide variety of procedures and specialties: arthroscopic orthopedic surgeries on knees, shoulders and other joints; repairs of minor fractures; tonsil, adenoid and sinus surgery; retina and cataract surgery; and some general surgery.

The center is on the first floor of a new five-floor tower that houses physicians' offices, including the West Tennessee Neuroscience and Spine Center. An enclosed bridge connects the building to the hospital, making it convenient for surgeons, anesthesiologists, supply support and emergency staff who need quick access. Patients have access to extended testing in the hospital and visitors at the center can walk over to the hospital cafeteria.

Brad Priester, MD, a retinal surgeon with Mid-South Retina Associates who will use the HOPD, looks forward to using the new center. "It is beautiful and offers tremendous improvements in patient flow, patient care, and technology," he said.
